So often we rush through our busy day only to end up repeating the same routine day in and day out. We place our self-care needs on the backburner and eventually forget what it is like to rest and recharge. Want to meditate more? Want to do yoga anytime you want? Want to find ways to interject your day with mindfulness and awareness? You can do all this and on a daily basis. Today I will show you how inject self-care into your daily routine.
I partnered with Resveralife to offer you tips on how to bring more peace and calm into your life. And starts in the one place we find ourselves most often, in our bodies and minds.
What is self-care and why is it important?
Self-care is when you take time out of your busy life to do the things that help to re-invigorate and restore your energy. Self-care prevents burnout and stress. Self-care is a set of healthy habits that you practice to maintain balance and wellness in your life. We need to practice self-care on a regular basis so that we continue to be our most optimal and happy selves.
How to Create an Easy Self-Care Routine
A self-care routine is crucial to your physical, emotional and mental well-being. How do we create one and incorporate it into our daily routine? Here are some tips that you can apply right away.
#1 Setting a Daily Intention
A daily intention will set the tone for the rest of the day. Set an intention by closing your eyes and visualizing how you plan on moving about your day. Think about where you are going, who you will be meeting with, what you’ll be eating, what you’ll be wearing, how you will be getting around. Think about all the actions you’ll be taking throughout your day. This is a form of self-guided Yoga Nidra that will help you build awareness and mindfulness in your thoughts and actions.
After visualizing your day, repeat your intention to yourself three times. Allow this intention to be with you throughout the day. Interject mini check-ins after completing major tasks to re-connect with your daily intention and see if you’re still on the path you visualized.
Here are some intention setting examples you can use:
- I will move through my day with presence. I am aware. I am present.
- I will approach everything and everyone with love. I am loved. You are loved.
- I am connected to my actions. I am connected to my surroundings. I am connected to everything.
#2 Meditation and Yoga
Include meditation and yoga at the beginning, middle, or end of your day. You can easily do this with a yoga mat handy at work or at home. Yoga can be as short as fifteen minutes or as long as an hour. I listen to free meditation or yoga videos on YouTube. You can also go into a nearby studio or gym for a guided yoga class to fully immerse yourself into the experience.

#3 Find Balance in Your Diet
Try eating food based on your dosha profile. What is a dosha? A dosha is a temperament or energy that circulates our bodies and governs our behaviors and way of being. Ayurveda is the sister science of yoga and recognizes the doshas. Ayurvedic medicine is one of the world’s oldest holistic whole-body healing systems and was developed more than 3,000 years ago in India. I am a Vata/Pitta, so drinking herbal tea helps to pacify my dosha and help me metabolize. Vatas will usually have fussy digestive systems. Tea also helps to start my day and calm my mind when it’s time for bed.

#4 Keep Your Space Tidy and Self Cleansed
For this section, we’ll refer to all spaces that you interact with on a regular basis. It can be the home, car, or workplace. Saucha, or cleanliness, is one of the Niyamas in the 8 limbed yoga path. A Niyama is a social contract that helps you interact with the world around you. To practice saucha, I shower every other day or after a workout. I use the super moisturizing Coco N’ Oats soap bar for my body. This block will last you a couple of years or you can also cut it into blocks as gifts for friends. For my face, I use Reservalife’s Botanical Facial Cleanser which gently removes sebum and dirt from my skin. It’s great for all skin types and smells fresh and natural.
#5 Practice Ahimsa toward Yourself and Others
Ahimsa is one of the five yamas, which are the ethical, moral and societal guidelines for yogis. Yamas are part of the 8 limbed yoga path. Ahimsa is a practice of non-violence in all aspects of life toward the self and toward others. It can include the practice of non-violence in the physical form, mentally and emotionally.
When you start to find yourself speaking badly about yourself or others, pause immediately and take three deep breaths with your eyes closed. Focus on the breath as it moves in and out. Focus on the sound and length of the breath. Allow your breath to take you momentarily away from any negative thoughts or behaviors. Repeat this as necessary.

#6 Develop a Regular Sleep Routine
Sleep is a very important ingredient for living our most optimal lives. Without the appropriate amount of rest, we would be struggling to stay awake and function. I use aromatherapy to help me sleep. My favorite essential oil blends are rose and lavender, and vanilla and orange. I add 3 drops of each scent and water into my Aromopure Mist diffuser, turn it on, and within minutes I am sound asleep.
Begin to Incorporate these practices into your self-care routine one at a time. You’ll start to see a shift in your mind and body as you move about your day. If you have family, invite them to participate with you! Remember that self-care is important and when you are feeling your best, you can show up as your best self for the ones you love.
