Updated: 1/25/2022 | How to Prevent and Treat Dry Skin
As one of the 31.6 million Americans with symptoms of eczema, I’m constantly looking for ways to treat and moisturize my skin. It sometimes cracks due to extreme dryness, and I have some scarring from the eczema and cracked skin that I really want to make disappear. I’ve had xerosis (dry skin) all my life. No matter how I adjusted my diet (ie. more water, moisturizing foods, lotion), my dry skin is here to stay.
In addition to treating these skin issues, I want to avoid chemicals and synthetic fragrances that could have other (harmful) side effects or consequences for my overall health down the road. Thankfully, it’s getting easier to find ‘clean’ beauty products that fill this need.
There are several natural oils I’ve found that have healing and moisturizing properties to fight eczema and other skin conditions. For example…
- Açai oil helps to rejuvenate and revitalize the skin, improving skin cell regeneration.
- Andiroba oil helps to protect and heal dry, cracked skin and is an effective treatment for chronic skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema.
- Copaiba oil contains natural acne-fighting substances to help reduce acne problems, while also helping to reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks.
- Known as the “Pure Miracle” in Brazil, maracujá oil repairs and moisturizes skin thanks to its high antioxidant content, soothing and healing cracked skin and treating conditions like eczema.
Maybe the most effective natural oil for treating extremely dry skin and issues like eczema is through the application of Brazil nut oil. Produced from those big, oval nuts you’ll find in mixed nut packages, Brazil nut oil is highly anti-inflammatory with rich mineral content to heal damaged or problematic skin. The oil is packed with Vitamins A, B-6, B-12, C, and D, along with other nutrients including fatty acids, magnesium, protein, zinc, and more. My skin feels healing with consistent application.
The antioxidant contents in Brazil nut oil help to encourage cellular repair and growth, treating the painful and itchy symptoms of eczema, while the oil’s anti-inflammatory properties reduce rashes and skin irritation. Its rich moisturizing properties nourish the skin and improve skin elasticity to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, blemishes and scars.
You can buy Brazil nut oil on its own, but you might enjoy better results with products that combine the oil with other oils and beneficial ingredients. This all natural, completely vegan Multi-Tasking Oil from Teadora Beauty is made with Brazil nut oil and other nourishing oils such as babassu and argan oil to deeply hydrate and treat the skin. It’s a perfect remedy for dry skin.
